Room San Gregorio Armeno

tour-della città di napoliSan Gregorio Armeno is named after the historical street San Gregorio Armeno, which is only 900 meters away from our Bed and Breakfast.

This is, perhaps, the most characteristic street of Napoli: chaotic and very crowded. By Christmas time it becomes barely possible to walk! The street of San Gregorio Armeno is also famous for its Nativity Scenes and its shepherds. Everything is manufactured by the old and young handicraftsmen, those few young artisans who have followed the footsteps of their parents, gathering the legacy of this antique art.

Naples and San Gregorio Armeno are also at border between old and new. Nowadays, among the various small and big Christmas cribs, shepherds, “the ox and the donkey” and the several “baby Jesus”, there are unusual characters, loved and not as much loved by the Neapolitans. For example, you may find a “Rafa” Benitez and a Matteo Renzi in their natural height. In the past years, they have been the “protagonists out of place” in a road most occupied by overflowing markets stalls of typical objects, superstitious symbols and, as it must not lack, the traditional character of Pulcinella.

The street of San Gregorio Armeno is be called by the old folks as Via San Liguro (nowadays, it is hardly heard). Dated back to the Greeks, it is a road that connects perpendicularly the superior decumanus (Via dei Tribunali) with the inferior decumanus (Spaccanapoli). In the middle of this picturesque route there is a temple dating 930, the Temple of Ceres, which in 1205 was dedicated to San Gregorio.
